Former lightweight world champion George Kambosos Jr is targeting a second stint as world champion, this time at 140lbs, but must first come through a meeting with fellow Aussie Jake Wyllie on Saturday morning.
Kambosos, (21-3, 10KOs) was initially set to face former contender Daud Yordan before the Indonesian was ruled out on medical grounds earlier this week.
Reigning Australian super-lightweight champion Wyllie, who’s 16-1(15KOs) as a pro, has stepped in for by far the sternest test of his five year career.
In a social media post, Kambosos said of the late change: “16-1 15KO Jake Wyllie. You are the current Australian 140 national Champion, your the only one that hasn’t been disrespectful for a payday, and I like how you have gone about your business, so I’m giving you the Rocky shot!!!
“But this ain’t a Rocky movie, don’t get it twisted, there is no happy ending. Ferocious statement see you all Saturday night!”

Kambosos targeting IBF champion Richardson Hitchins
Kambosos has been clear around his intentions since announcing his decision to move to super-lightweight.
In fact, he’s spent a bulk of fight week taunting current IBF beltholder Richardson Hitchins, whom he intends to step in with providing he avoids defeat this weekend.
“Deep down, he [Hitchins] loves me. He’s always talking about me. He needs me. He has the belt but I’m his big fight”, he told Matchroom Boxing.
The American brandished Kambosos as “delusional” in response.
One thing that is for certain is how vital it is for Kambosos to return to winning ways this weekend.
Frankly, anything other than a win could end any ambitions for future world title challenges for good, given that three of his last four have ended in defeat to Devin Haney (twice) and Vasyl Lomachenko.
In fact, even the fight in which he did get his hand raised in that period, versus Maxi Hughes, was a bout which many scored in favour of the latter.
The drop in form follows his stunning upset of then unified champion Teofimo Lopez in November 2021, when Kambosos dropped the American before climbing off the canvas himself to win the titles by split-decision.
Ultimately, victory by any means necessary will do the job for Kambosos this weekend, though the disparity in levels fought at between himself and Wyllie will lead to many expecting a win in emphatic fashion on Saturday morning.
